1974 was the last production year for the famous 455 cui Superduty cars, and with that it was also the last factory produced car that really could carry the name Musclecar. As in 1974 this car was the fastest and highest HP engine for sale in any production car. This alone make’s this car a true Legend and highly collectible and desirable.
In 1974 all main brands had stopped producing high performance muscle cars due to the fuel crisis that was at its peak that year and also because emission demands in many states were becoming impossible to pass with cars like this 455 SD. So sales and demand for these unique cars just disappeared. The other reason for the end of the Muscle car era, was the fact that insurance company's just didn't want to insure these fast and "dangerous" cars anymore so even if you could buy one, getting an insurance was like finding a needle in a haystack.
It was a very brave move by Pontiac to keep this stunning performance car on the market in 1974 as the were literary the only ones left with a true performance model on the market. Chevy, Ford, Mopar, Olds all had cancelled their Big block powerhouses and this car you see here was the last of a dying breed unfortunately.
The 455 SD engines were unique engines and developed by Pontiac's racing division in 1973 as an answer to the competition. In 1973 the big news happened under the hood of the Firebird's when Pontiac engineers unleashed one of the most powerful street engines of all time. The option number was LS2, the 455 cui Super Duty. Until just recently, all the hype had centred around the RA 400 engines, but the Super Duty are without a doubt one of the best and fastest engine's Pontiac had every produced, all the way up to today. The are now recognized as the tremendous machines they were and remain today. And, remember, they were built in significantly lower numbers than any Ram air engine and are extremely rare today.
The story of how the Super Duty became reality began when Herb Adams ran Pontiac's Special Projects and came under fire from his bosses in the late 1960s. "We'd been involved in the 303 for SCCA racing, and the NASCAR 366, and then word came down from up above, 'What are you doing fooling around with those racing engines when Pontiac isn't racing?' Let's use that technology and do a production engine. We then took the same people who'd been working on the 303 and 366, and we put them to work on the SD-455--basically Tom Nell and Jeff Young," according to Michael Lamm's book The Fabulous Firebird.
The initial given HP rating was 310HP and a monster torque of 500 nm. With there 4 bolt main cap's, special SD heads, unique cam and intake and fuel systems the were however highly underrated. But to keep these cars sellable and more important insurable, the factory just drop the actual performance numbers. Many tests by car journalists and on the dragstrip prove that the engine had closer to 400+hp and 600 NM torque, numbers that in 1974 were the highest around. And with a little tweaking and tuning these engines could make close to 500hp easily.
The Super Duty cylinder heads were patterned after the Ram Air IV. The SD heads had big, round exhaust ports and even larger intakes. Pushrod holes actually broke into the intake ports and were sealed with press-in tubes, according to Lamm's book. The exhaust manifolds, which resembled headers, would interchange or fit other Pontiac engines with round exhaust ports like the 455 HO and the Ram Air IV. Despite the time dedicated to their design, the stock Super Duty exhaust system was probably the single largest limitation to this engine's potential. The Firebird, due to its floor pans, required a single transverse muffler near the rear end and then split into dual outlets. Tube headers would have really made this engine breathe.
All in all the 1973 and 74' SD engines were unique in there design and besides being very rare today, the still are impressive engines that even for today's standards are to be called fast. These cars are still able to compete against the fastests modern sportscars today.
The car that were proud of the present to you here is a stunning example even besides its rare performance packages and engine, its also been completely body-off (rotisserie) restored to the highest standards and it also comes with all the paperwork to prove its pedigree. The complete drive line appears to be fully correct for the car and all the engine casting codes (Block, intake, exhaust manifolds) and stamping's on them appear to be correct and original to the car. All the cars Vin number stamps and other factory details are also present and all match the PHS documentation and its factory invoice and other a big binder full of history and owners doc's that comes with the car.
A 74 Super duty is a rare car by itself, but with this car also being equipped with almost every available option you could buy just makes it even more desirable and as stated above very rare indeed. This combined with the cars paperwork and documented restoration ( we have many pics in our files of the complete process) makes this car one of the best on the market today.
The last owner a Mr Hachem also from Florida bought the car with the goal to have the car restored completely back to factory specs. All work on the car was performed by one of the world's leading Firebird restoration shops and after all work was done around 2010, the car also won many awards for its outstanding restoration. The engine and trats were rebuild by the legendary Charlie K, a very well known Pontiac SD specialist. After the restoration the car was only driven 1-2 thousand miles, so today all the bugs that come with a fresh restoration are long gone. We have many pictures of the restoration process available on request.
The body itself was, even before the restoration process began, in very solid and original condition with no apearant accidents or damages. This was probably due to the fact that the car spend it's entire live in Florida. After it was sold by Jim Moran Pontiac in Hollywood Florida to it's first owner, Mr Howard Levine from Ft.lauderdale , the car never left the state until we recently purchased it. Along the way the car had around 2-3 owners in total. So this car is very well preserved and truly original all the way. A rare find, especially as well documented and all original as this car still is today.
The paint job performed on the car during it's restoration is really high-end and its shine is amazing. The car is also a true Hood bird car ( which was an additional cost option in 74 ) and after the paint of the car only factory original decal’s and it's famous bird were applied. The underside of the car was also painted back to it's factory correct style in red-oxide and all the cars other components were also coated and painted correct and according to the factory spec's.
And last but for sure not least, the important and original drivetrain were also all rebuild professionally to factory original specs, as stated by the legendary Charlie K.The engine bay is also very highly detailed as is the rest of the car. The complete brake system, the steering components and all suspension parts are also all correct and restored pieces. All in all this car today, looks as the day it left the dealership showroom floor back in 1974, or maybe even a bit better.
The car is not only a showpiece, but was also built and restored to be used and driven, and we can tell you that this 455SD also truly drives, steers and performs like the day it left the factory back in 1974 !. Everything on and inside the car also functions as it should. We have seen and owned many SD car's and we can asure you that this one is absolutely on of the best, most original and correct, and one of the rarest 74 SD' worldwide!
For its asking price you can't even restore a car of this magnitude, and we estimate that more than 175k euro was invested in its professional restoration alone. So besides the fact that it's a great car to own and drive or take it to car show or concourse event's, it is also a great investment opportunity for a great price which will leave room for growth for the future owners' investment.
