COMING SOON / EXPECTED !
This beautiful Chevrolet Chevelle SS with the ultra-rare L78 375 factory HP 396 Big block!
It is one of only 1138 ever build performance Chevelle's with this engine and transmission combination. Today only 34 of these rare L78 cars are registered. The car is equipped with the TH400 Transmission with horse shoe floor shifter and many other desirable options. The car comes with a copy of a factory build sheet and appears to show its genuine SS L78 pedigree!
And it is in amazing condition, The floors, quarter panels, doors, everything is completely rust-free and spotless. The underside of this car is like it came from the factory. The Cranberry red paint with its painted on SS stripes is also as new and in fantastic condition with a great and deep shine. The car has all the correct original SS details such as the F-41 rear sway bar, boxed control arms, 12 bolt rear end and correct SS dash.
The cars engine is a rare, original factory replacement, original CE coded L78 396 Big block that was under rated by the factory at 375hp that's hooked up to a correct TH400 transmission that brings the power to a Chevy 12 bolt rear axle. This combined with the many other true SS details makes us feel that this car is the real deal. Every detail on the car also confirms that. We at PTTM just love these L78 cars and although its getting almost impossible to find them, but every now and then we still find them and are proud to offer it to our clients.
With the base V8 engine in a 70' Malibu or Chevelle being a 302cui small-block, that was followed by the more powerful 350cui V8 SB engine, the base engine for a true 70' Chevelle SS car was the 325hp 396 Big block. Followed by a 350 HP version and then the real hi-performance engine the L78!
With its impressive 375 factory HP ratings (in real they had close to 425+hp) It was the most powerful engine you could get in a Chevelle besides, later on in the production year it was replaced by the legendary LS6 with it's 450 factory rated HP. This L78 car for instance with its performance 396 was more powerful and therefore faster than the 454cui LS5 code engine! Which only had 360hp and had a milder hydraulic camshaft with less power.
The L78-396 engine was unchanged for the 1970 year, however in the years before 1970, it was rated at 425hp by Chevrolet. The reasons why it was changed to 375hp might be because around 1970 it became almost impossible for clients to get insurances for high output cars and that might have also influenced the sales figures of these cars. So it's thought, as many car manufactures did this, that the rating on paper was lowered so car sales would go up instead of down. But for real the engine was not changed at all, it carries all the same components, camshaft, intake and carb and has the same compression ratio.
The L78 cars were maybe even faster than its successor, the LS6, as that engine is also a much heavier engine. The 396-L78 engined big block cars are up until today one of the best performance cars around. We have heard stories that with a little tweek, the L78 outperformed the LS6, making them one of the best kept classic muscle car's secrets around and therefor today these cars are very valuable and rare indeed.
With prices of the real LS6 Chevelle's going through the roof this L78 car is the next best thing you could get in 1970 and it being a fraction lighter than the 454 LS6 engine, this car was almost just as fast!, the L78 is also much rarer than a LS6 as its production numbers were much lower. So all in all this car is a true grail.
And knowing that the L78-396 probably still had 425hp and was much lighter than the LS6, meant that this car we present to you here was maybe just as fast, or a tad faster than the LS6. The 396-L78 engine is also highly sought after for these reasons and it was very popular amongst the drag racing community up until today, which might explain why so little of the original L78 cars have survived and why many of them no longer carry their factory original drivetrain. All in all this fact makes this car even rarer than it already was.
Seeing this car is also equipped originally with its 3.31 rear axle gear ratio and limited slip diff the 0-60 mph times are impressive. So this is a true muscle car in every sense of the word! And a car that wouldn't have many competitors on the streets back in the days. The car we present to you here is also, besides being a rare performance Chevelle, still in very rare original condition. All the body panels and floors are original! To the car and so are almost all of its interior components and correct interior details.
The car was restored and completed around 2010 but it looks as stunning as the day it was completed as it was almost never driven and it was only rarely driven and stored in a climate controlled garage since then. The current Cranberry red paint color and black SS stripes (Original color was Cherry) is a correct 70' factory color and in very nice condition with no flaws and it has a great shine, the black SS stripes are also painted on (No decals) and correctly applied just like the factory did them back in 1970.
Every detail is checked and perfected. But otherwise, this car is a true all original icon, as its still very, very original overall. The engine and transmission are also pro rebuild as were the complete suspension, fuel and steering system and now everything is just in perfect condition again just like the day it rolled of the production line.
All in all this car is in fantastic condition and can be enjoyed by its new owner for many more years to come and it carries all of its important original components and parts, It's completely rust free with all its original sheet metal, glass, floors, drivetrain and trim pieces.
And besides the fact that this is one of the most desirable Muscle cars around, a 1970 Chevelle SS and especially one with the right colors such as this Cranberry red with black stripes edition, is also a stunning and beautiful car to look at. The just seem to have something magical about them and their lines and shapes combined with the new grill and other changed details for that year just makes it one of the most desirable Chevy's ever produced.
It was also the last year the L78 engine option was available. After 1970 the SS option package was no longer an exclusive package for the real High-performance models, but it could be ordered as a dress-up package on almost any engine combination. So you could end up with a base 350cui small block car, with standard suspension and brakes having the SS badges, that before 1970 was unthinkable. So it's correct to state that this 1970 Chevelle SS we show you here, especially with all its additional performance features is one of the last true Performance SS cars that left the factory.
So if you're looking for a highly collectible, rare and real performance orientated Muscle car, this might well be your car.
The fact that this car is also restored with originality in mind and seeing its in great overall condition makes it even more desirable for sure. Its absolutely rust free and we feel it was never involved in any accidents. We have seen and sold many Chevelle's and can honestly state this is one is very solid, honest and clean. No work needed to enjoy this car.
For this money, you can't even restore one, let only find a better all done and ready example. So here is your chance to own a great looking L78 engined car for a very attractive price. So if you want a quality car, that is also very rare in all its details and with this highly desirable drivetrain, and with a copy of the factory buildsheet, this must be it!
And besides it being a great investment, it's an amazing car to own, drive and enjoy as well seeing it's fully serviced and inspected by our crew and this car is not only for show but also for go!
