This 1965 Chevy Impala appears to be a true and very rare L78 396 Big block car with 425HP, manual Muncie 4-speed transmission. This car is completely body off restored and a real high quality build car. It is one of only 1480 SS L78 cars and one of approx. 1275 ever build 4-speeds! And you almost never see them for sale as not many of them are left today. It is a true and very rare high-performance car. With these cars options and in this rare color combination it might well be one of a hand full build cars.
So yes! It is a rare car and PTTM is proud to present this great and rare car to its clients. These original Impalas are getting harder and harder to find, particular in its original condition as many 65's were abused and hacked up or customized, but not this one! So having a real original car is absolutely rare and very desirable for many.
Its also one of the most sought after Impala's with the desirable 6 round tail lights and the smooth body shapes. Its a correct 166 code Super sport car that's also still in its factory original RR coded (Reginal red) paint and equipped with its original 897 coded red bucket seat and console interior. And although the engine and transmission don't have there Vin codes stamped, we do think all is correct. Seeing this is a 1965 car that was produced late 1964 (1965 model year) it is not that strange as many Chevy's left the factory without them back then. It wasn't until late 1968 before that became mandatory by law, so not all cars received them.
With more than 12 production plants, dozens of different engine and transmission production and assembly plants from Chevrolet alone, it wasn't all that well organized just yet. But seeing this car has all its correct and original components, the true SS code Vin of the car and all its details that point out is the real deal, although its hard to guarantee that.
At the end of 1964, Chevrolet introduced the all-new designed Impala model for the 1965 model year. And at the same time the introduced the strong and all new designed 396 cui performance Big block for its top model cars. A complete new design and one of the best Chevy V8 big blocks ever designed. These 396 engines came in the base" 325 Hp version and the very desirable L78 high performance 396 with no less than 425 factory horsepower and tons of torque! And keep in mind that in 1965, having a 425 HP Big block engine in your car was the highest factory rated HP rating you could buy in a streetcar. So it makes this car a real performance car icon.
The famous Hemi 426 engine from Chrysler, for instance, was not even for sale in any car up to late 1966. So this puts the L78 Impala in the History books as one of the fastest's cars around worldwide in that year and it's considered a real Holy grail and a hidden gem's of the Chevrolet performance pedigree.
This L78 engine had 4 bolt main caps, special closed chambered performance heads, a 4bbl intake, and 4bbl carb, and an 11.0.1 compression ratio and a performance cam. These 396 engines were only available in combination with the optional SS packages, however, the SS package itself was also available with the base engines like the 327 small block cars. So this car is the holy grail of the 65' impala SS cars being and a true SS and it's also equipped with the rare Big block 396 -L78 performance engine and manual 4-speed transmission. Hooked up to a manual Muncie M21 4 speed transmission these Impala's, although not really a pony or lightweight car, were fast cars! It was also estimated that these engines, when equipped with better breathing exhaust manifolds or headers would make close to 500 hp! The L78 396 was one of the best performance engines Chevy ever build and with these horsepower rating only for sale in 1965. As of 1966 the L78 was de-tuned and was left with a mere 375HP.
So this being a 65 car makes it rare and one of the fastest's and rarest classic Impala SS cars ever produced. In 1965 the 425 HP - L78 was only available in the Corvette and Impala's. As of 1966 and on, this highest Chevy HP performance engine was replaced by the also famous 427cui-425 HP engines, but the overall performance stayed the same. SO all in all this car has some serious history and it was the godfather of all later Chevy performance cars and it might well be the first real Muscle cars.
The car we present to you here is of outstanding quality and still very correct and original to its factory original conditions, with only some very minor changes for better looks or better performance. Everything, inside and out, was either new or restored to as new condition, however, the car was not over-restored and wears still many of its original parts and it also can be driven and enjoyed. The body is laser straight and rust free, it has great paint with a deep shine and the interior is just like the day it rolled of the production line and all is factory correct and original. It just doesn't come much better than this! It is also a great car to drive and it handles superbly. These Impalas are fantastic cars for long and very comfortable cruises.
The car is also equipped with all its correct SS details and has many desirable factory options as you can see in the below listing. According to the currently marked guides from Haggerty, and many other independent car appraiser's the value of this rare Impala is estimated between 85-110000,- Euro, and we have seen them being sold for that and even more. But with our asking price being well below that mark! This car is priced very attractive and will leave the room as a healthy investment for its future owner as it is also a genuine 4-speed car and red /red is one of the most wanted color combinations around. Also, keep in mind that this is also a completely restored car and can't be compared with just any 65 Impala because of its condition and also its very special engine and everything is in great condition. This is a turn key car!
We estimate more than 75000,- was spent alone on the restoration (and that's without the car itself). So for this price we are sure you won't ever find a nicer, completely turn key ready car anywhere.
