1971 Ford Mustang Fastback MACH 1 - 4 speed Super Cobra Jet 429 cui, dragpack 4.11 geared big block car, with functional ram air hood!.
it just can't get any better than this, its also loaded with many desirable options. The car is an original low mile (29850 ! ) car before it was restored and its a real ONE of ONE ever produced car and one of only five! SCJ 4-speed cars build in this rare color combination. And yes, It appears to be completely numbers matching as well.
This is a really a super rare and highly collectible investment grade car as its one of only 324 ever produced 4 speeds with the SCJ (CJ-R) engine and ram air installed. And more important even, in this rare color and interior combination and options its one of only 1,7% ever produced! Mach1's and one of only 9 SCJ's so maybe one of only 4 or 5- 4 speed cars came in this colors .
This combined with its original Y coded 4.11 drag pack rear axle gears, and all its other special options combined. It is probably a true one of one ever produced car in this combination of specs and options. And probably also the only one in this combination that's still carries its complete original components and options. It just does not get much rarer and more desirable than this!.
The car comes with a Marti report and all it's original body tags and correct casting and Vin numbers to prove its original pedigree. This car is a true Drag pack car with ram air hood ( see pictures also) and with its manual 4 speed trans, instead of the normal C6 3 speed automatic, and its 4.11 Y code rear end gears and the Detroit locker diff and the lack of the HP eating air conditioning, this car was designed for speed as no other. As you also might well know, a manual 4 speed trans brings up to 30% more HP and torque to the rear axle than any automatic transmission due to the loss in power because of the hydrolics and the converter. Its also just way more fun to drive.
1971 Was the first year of the all new body design, but also, sadly the last year of the factory performance big-block cars. PTTM is very proud to present this great and rare car to its clients. It's not often that you see these fastbacks in such a great color combination and quality. This car has been completely restored inside and out and it's equipped with many desirable options as well and comes in a fantastic factory correct color combination of grabber blue with silver stripes.
At the end of 1970, ford introduced a complete new design for the 1971 Mustang, the new design had an improved steering and handling package and a much longer more sleek design. Top predator model was again the Mach 1 fastback. With the Boss 429 cars (1969/1970) not being the expected success on the streets and tracks, Ford had decided to drop the Boss 429 engine all togheter, something that was to be expected as that engine design gave much issues and it also was not the most reliable engine Ford had ever designed. But with that engine gone there was need for a new performance V8 engine that would have the same power as the Boss 429 engine, but not its problems!
So in the late 70's Ford engineers decided to use the base 429 engine as a platform to develop there new "high performance" engine from it in CJ (Cobra Jet) and SCJ (Super Cobra Jet) form. The 429 ( Code 385 block ) SCJ was one of the best and fastest's engine designs Ford ever produced. After the famous FE 427 and 428 Series, this all new 429 design was the next step in there search for more performance and stronger engines.
With 4 bolt main caps, a special extra strong crankshaft with stronger connecting rod's, special forged alu pistons ( Cast piston in the CJ ) with 11.3.1 compression ratio, a solid lifter performance camshaft with adjustable rockers, special developed heads with canted larger valves and much better flow, and a special intake with a 780 cfm carb and a special high flow oil and water pump, the 429 Super Cobra Jet engine was born. It was available with normal air intake system and with the optional Ram air induction system with shaker hood that this car is equipped with. There was also a milder, de-tuned more normal Cobra Jet engine available.
Ford rated these special SCJ (also called Cj-R) engines at a mere 375 HP (ram-air) and 450 ft.lbs of torque (610 NM). Exactly the same as the earlier BOSS 429 engine of 1969/70 which used the same short block but different alu heads. But as was usual in the early 70's these numbers were not actual but lowered because other wise these cars would be impossible to sell as the were almost not insurable anymore in the early 70's.
Many car journalist and road tests estimated that the 429 SCJ engine had more than 400+HP and 500 ft.lbs or more in torque in stock set-up! And with Ram air it would have even been 5% more. And with the stock exhaust manifolds replaced for open headers this power band would even be 15-20% higher with ease. In fact they estimated and prove that this 429 SCJ engine was faster and also much better and stronger than the previous Boss 429 engines, something that many 0-60 and 1/4 mile test revealed. So all in all, your looking here at one of the fastest Mustang, Boss or even Mach1 Ford ever produced! How cool is that.
With a huge price tag for these expensive and special designed performance engine and the fact that the SCJ was only available with the high cost option drag pack 3,90 or 4.11 rear end differentials, and with the up-coming fuel crises and the now extreme insurance costs for these performance cars, it was to be expected that sales of these power houses would not be great and sales numbers were not big. So midway 1971 these great monster engines were dropped all togheter and the Mach1 was only, as of mid 1971, available with the 351 cui as there biggest engine. Not much later that 351cui was also dropped and all that was left was the old 302 cui V8. 1971 was therefor the last year Ford produced these rare big-block performance fastback Mach 1's.
This means that this car is one of the most rare and unique, and maybe even the fastest Ford Mustang Fastback ever to come of Ford's production lines. It was only available for around 5/6 months and with only a total of around 1865 429 units (CJ and SCJ ) produced its one of the rarest engine Ford had ever produced. It's even rarer than the BOSS 429 with around 2300 total units and cars produced!. Actor Steve McQueen also at one point owned one of these rare and desirable '71 429 SCJ cars. So dont confuse the plain 429 with the 429 Super cobra jet engine, as these were true factory build performance engines.
A stock 429 CJ Mach 1 was among the 1971 Mustangs that Chuck Koch tested for a January
1971 Motor Trend review. It did 6.5 seconds 0-60 mph, and 13.8 on the quarter mile and it topped out at nearly 114 mph and had averaged just 9-10 mpg on
premium gas. Keep in mind that that car was not a Super Cobra Jet and didn't have the Drag package installed, as than the times would have been even faster. The stock Boss 429 ran 0-60 mph in 7,1 secs and the 1/4 mile was covered in 14.1 seconds and 118 mph trap speed. Which means that this SCJ is considerably faster than the more famous Boss 429 cars. It was also noted that although the new '71 design was heavier and a bit lager it handled much better, had better brakes as its predecessor, and its design also had much better aerodynamics.
The combination of the 429 SCJ ( CJ-R) engine, its top loader manual 4 speed trans and its 4.11 rear end gears was just lethal and this car we offer you today is not only super rare but also one of the fastest muscle cars Ford produced in the 60's and early 70's. Its a true "hidden gem" and not many people now of it's existence and its true potential in performance and pure beauty. Its also much more rare than any '69 or '70 Boss 429 which nowadays cost up to 6 times more than this car and makes this 429 SCJ an incredible investment opportunity and give you great value for your money. Its a change to own a legendary Mustang for a very interesting price that leaves room for growth in value for its future new owner.
Seeing this car's overall quality and original condition ( only 29000 original miles!! ) with untouched body and structure it might well be one of the nicests 429 SCJ's in the world today. And the fact that it also appears to be the fastest and most performance build Mustang ever produced of its era, this car is an absolute rare find. And if you ad the fact that it was also the absolute last true Ford Muscle car produced this car is an amazing piece. As after 1971, with the upcomming fuelcrisis and strickt enviromental rules that were introduced nation wide, true performance musclecars were a thing of the past. It makes this 429 SCJ even more historical and special than it already is.
The car we present to you here was restored with high quality in mind and its in amazing condition and the complete engine and drive line was rebuild as well. This car runs and drives just as well as it did back in 1971. Its a true icon and a real deal Muscle car in it's most pure and most exciting form. This car was one of the fastest's cars on the streets back in the early 70's! And with its 29000 original miles this car was also well preserved before the restoration began and all if its original components are therefor still on or with the car. Its just an amazing combination of a true low mile, all original car, that in combination with its restoration and rebuild driveline that makes this car feel and look as the day it came from the dealer. Its just stunning to see how original and in great condition this car is. It drives like a real as new survivor with the benefits of a restored and reliable car.
It's first original owner must have been a real performance fan as he ordered the car with everything Ford had to offer back in 1971. You can imagine that when he received notice that his car came inn at Smith Ford in Philadelphia in February 1971, he must have been super excited. There just were not many cars faster than this car and surely the also didn't look this amazing. In the many years that followed the car was pampered and well taken care of as it never had more than 29.000 miles since new and it was still in super solid and great shape before it was restored recently. The fact that this car still carries its factory original ( numbers correct ) chrome 15 inch magnum wheels already proof's how original and low mile this car is. As these wheels already started to rust already a week after the cars left the factory!
The interior car is amazing and looks great, everything you see here has been restored and no costs were spared. From new carpets, headliner and door panels to the restored seat covers and much much more. Even the dash gauge cluster looks like it left the factory yesterday! And so does the rest. All the gauge and electrics work and so does the heater and wipers. Just a stunning car with an interior that brings you straight back to the 70's! The reason we think this car is still very original and its body, chassis and all its original components still in great shape is due to the fact that the car is an original survivor low mile car before the restoration was performed. So it must have been pampered and garage stored almost all of its live. Very rare indeed.
This is one of the nicest and rarest Mach1 Mustang Fastbacks we have ever seen. We also just love the body lines of the fastbacks, particularly because because the roof line is long and sleek and that makes this car a true fastback, more so than the earlier models as more and more people now start to understand and see. The fact that this one also is one of the fastest classic Mustangs produced, makes it a holy grail in disguise. And although the might be a few inches longer and a bit heavier than its predecessor, there were very fast and great fun to drive and the handle like a dream. The suspension of this model was more sophisticated than the earlier models as well. And with this car also being equipped with power front disc brakes, and heavy duty rear drums, it's not only fast but it also stops safe and sound.
If you ever wanted something really unique and ultra rare... and one of the fastest's muscle cars of its era, in a great color combination of Grabber blue and black bucket seat interior... with a manual 4 speed that gives great fun and performance, its 4.11 rear end drag pack (more rare than the 3,91 package) And will win you awards and respect of your fellow car hobbyists, well than this might just be the car for you. For its price you cant even restore one.. and that is if you could ever find a fully correct and original car that's this rare. Its low original miles driven just shows because the car is in as new condition and we could not find any welds or replacement panels on the entire body, chassis or floors.
With today's prices of 429 Boss Mustangs exceeding the 350.000,- marker with ease, this car that is in fact much rarer than any Boss 429, and it being also faster on the 0-60 and 1/4 mile times, and it had one of the best Ford designed engines ever produced and it also is a very attractive car indeed and a real asset for any car collection or petrol head. This Fastback might well be one of the rarest Classic performance Mustangs produced.
It's price today is still only a fraction of the price of a Boss 429 although we estimate that that could change rapidly as prices for them are increasing fast and the '71 SCJ's are much rarer to find because the production numbers are way lower than the Boss car's. And with more and more people that now starting to see that these SCJ mach 1 cars are one of the last "well kept Ford secrets". Which would mean that the 71' 429 SCJ might soon be worth even more in the near future than any other Mustang or Boss ever produced.
This means that this car might well be one of the best investment's you can do and it leaves lots of room to grow in the near future. And with this car being in completely restored condition and in this ultra rare color, and with its 4.11 drag pack option package it might well also be one of the best for sale on the market today so don't wait to long if you want something special.
But besides all that and maybe even more important, its just a gorgeous performance car with a great appearance and stance and its great fun to drive and enjoy. It will for sure also be a winner on any cars how or concour's d'elegance you might attend with it. Don't let this one slip away, its rare, looks amazing, is fast and one of the last genuine factory big block Ford's produced and therefor a significant and important piece of Muscle car history. It would be a great asset for any car collection.
