NEW & IN OUR SHOWROOM NOW!
This one of one number matching1970 Shelby Mustang 350GT convertible in absolute Concours condition. This true Shelby is one of only 57 produced GT350 convertibles and its the only one in the world with this fantastic Royal maroon factory original paint color. And how many of these rare cars will today still carry there original drivetrain's? Or still exists? Maybe a handful.
This is one ultra rare car and the combination with the white interior and white convertible power top makes it one classy and fantastic eyecatcher. And on top of that, the car also comes with paperwork to prove its pedigree. It just doesn't get much better than this. For the1969 model year, the Shelby GT's were completely re-designed from the previous model year. With a completely new design, the 69/70 Shelby's looked amazing and completely different from the previous years were you could also still clearly see the car's resemblance to the Mustang fastback's. The 69/70 model year also had much more unique Shelby parts than any Shelby before this period which makes these car's very desirable and rare.
Almost anything on these Shelby's was re-designed and equipped with special produced parts. Front fenders, Hood, Complete grill, Lower valance panel, the trunk lid, taillight assembly, suspension and handling packages everything was unique for the 69/70 cars. The new design also looked much more modern and looked way more streamlined than the previous cars. The list of special lightweight components was also longer to save weight such as the front fenders, hood, front end, trunk lid and spoiler and tail section all being lightweight, which gave these cars a much better handling and performance drive than the base mustangs.
Another all new and great looking feature was the longitudinal and functional hood scoops and the newly designed side scoop's, but even more, the special exhaust system that didn't came out the back normally as two separate tips, but in the middle with a new very uniquely designed dual exhaust end piece that looked like it came straight out of a race car. Something that was never seen again on any production streetcar and had a great sound and made these cars stand out even more than the already did. It was topped of with a special side stripe that reflected in the dark and that featured the name of the model.
With Shelby convertible's being already very rare cars and only produced for the first time in 1968, the 69/70 model year made a huge leap forward in their overall appearance. The all-new 1969 interior design and special features with all new high back seats, modern and upgraded wood grain dashboard, new door panels and new convertible top design made the 69 car's stand out even more and besides being very sporty the also gave much more comfort and a luxurious appearance. With the GT500 being the top model with there 428FE 335hp engines, The GT350 had a 351cui performance V8 that punched out 295hp which was a great number seeing the 351 engines were much lighter and more docile than the 428's.
The standard transmission was the 4 manual 4 speed in both model's and an extra cost automatic transmission was available, for the GT500 it was the C6, but the GT350 got the all-new FMX performance transmission that was all new for the 69 model year. The GT500's heavier engine didn't make it noticeably faster than the GT350, but with the much lighter driveline, the GT350 had the overhand in handling steering and braking performance's. Therefore the GT350 was probably the better car to choose if you wanted the best overall performance back in those days and definitely not the lesser car.
Especially in a Convertible like a car, we present to you here the 350GT combined with the all-new FMX automatic transmission was a great choice. Because a convertible is normally not only bought for its all-out performance but also for some nice summertime cruising and relaxing, the 350GT was just the better buy. It handled much better in corners, its steering was much more direct and more comfortable and the 0-60mph performance might even be better than its bigger Cubic inch equipped brother. It's just the smarter car to buy and enjoy. This fact might well have been one of the hidden secrets in the 70's seeing the GT350 is a much more rare car to find then the GT500, even more so now than back in the days. And because this car isn't equipped with airco (who needs that in a convertible) it also doesn't loose10-15% % of its engine HP.
The 1970 model year also has a great and unique historical story to them. Being only minorly upgraded from the 1969 model year, with added sports stripes on the hood, the addition of a good looking front spoiler and some other more minor detail difference's, the main difference in them was the Vin number the carried. Because of the upcoming fuel crisis, extreme high insurance cost's and high price tag are for the new 1969 model opposed to say other sportscar's, the sales were not high and some cars were unsold by the midyear of 1969 when normally a new model year change was announced. Shelby decided to upgrade the car and change the Vin code's to make the car's continuation cars from the 1969 year. But that wasn't easy to do! And the story around that plan and how it was finally executed is a unique story in itself that can be found online if you like to know more about it. But it makes the 70' model-year car even more unique than any Shelby GT before.
The car we present to you here is one of those 70' GT350's, a true performance car in every sense of the word, but also a fantastic car to really enjoy and drive. Its combination of the 295 hp V8 and the optional FMX automatic trans, its ultra-rare Royal Maroon factory original color combined with the nice cool white interior and white convertible top, makes this car not only very sporty but also very luxurious and exclusive.
The actual HP rating was much higher than the factory brochures. This was due to the fact that the insurance company's in the 70's would no longer ensure cars with very high HP ratings, especially not to younger drivers, and with them being a large part of the sales targets, the most factory's just simply lowered the ratings on paper. But its estimated that these GT350's had close to 375-400 actual HP and we believe that in an instance.
With only two! Royal Maroon Convertible's build ( One GT350 and one GT500), this car is the only GT350 in this color in the world. The additional options, the combination of the white interior makes this car even more desirable and a true one of one car ever produced in the widest sense of the word. And believe us, a white interior and convertible top do not only look very bright and spacey, its also, opposite to a black interior, very cool in the hot summer sun with the top up or down.
Just look at this car, what an amazing looking beauty right? And what a blast to be the only one in the world to own such an amazing car. The fact that it's still completely factory original and carries its numbers matching drivetrain from front to back is an additional feature and makes it even more unique. The cars complete history is documented and with the car, as well as a copy of the Shelby registry, original dealer invoice and order form, original owners manual and a de-luxe Marti report all prove this car's pedigree !. So it's very well documented.
We also have pictures and invoices of the car's restoration. The car spent the biggest part of its life in the sunny states as it went from the dealer, Tonkin Ford in Oregon to its apparent first owner in Gridley California and stayed there for 20 years when it was sold to the owner who had the car professionally restored in Iowa. This might well be the reason why the cars body, chassis, and structure, as well as almost all its original parts, survived all these years. Before the restoration began the car only had around 63k miles ! on the odometer and today it only stands at 67 k miles. So we estimate that after the restoration the car has only been driven around 3-3500 miles.
On top of all that this car was also restored to the highest possible Concours level and might even look better today than it ever did when it rolled off the assembly lines. And although the car was well-pampered al of its life, it got to a point were all became to look more worn and the interior, the paint, and other details started to show their age. The body, floors and structure and all other components, however, were still in great condition and besides a minor repair here and there, the car's structure stayed completely original and there were no rust issues. Even the hood, trunk lid, and front fenders are all original to the car which is very rare but also very important for a rare classic car like this.
Even the engine and driveline only had driven a proven 60k miles at that point. So several years later it was decided to restore the car back to its former glory and although the drivetrain and all components had only seen a mere 60k miles, it was decided that everything, the complete engine, transmission and the rest of the drivetrain was going to be rebuild as well. When all the hard work was done the car was finished it immediately started to win awards on several car-shows it was presented too. It was also Judged by the SAAC and was awarded the highest possible points, some minor details that could be improved were all taken care of and today this car is an in absolute Tip-top shape.
All was done to the highest possible Concours level as the pictures show and great attention was given to make the car highly detailed and correct to its factory original condition. And where ever possible only factory correct and original parts were used. To restore a car to this high-quality level we estimate at today's rates it would take at least 150000,- and that's without the value of the car itself. Nothing was left untouched and the complete engine, transmission, rear axle, brakes, fuel system, suspension, and steering system were also restored completely. Just look at the pictures and you can understand how well its restored and the costs and time involved in that process.
The car originally was produced at the Dearborn production plant and therefore has the correct black underside coating instead of the red oxide version you'll find on some other production plant cars. The underside of this car is ultra clean and highly detailed with all the correct factory markings and decals. All the other factory original tag's, decals and Vin numbers are in place. It speaks for itself to say that we have pictures of the process being performed and a report to prove the originality of the car, one of one build, and how it came from the factory when it was new.
This Shelby GT350 might well be one of the nicest and most rare Convertibles in the world today, and its also equipped with every option you could possibly want on a great classic convertible sports car of this magnitude. It's a highly collectible car and a very solid investment, but more importantly its also a car that can be driven and enjoyed.
