Real deal Firebird 400 convertible and completely nut and bolt high end restored back to its factory original condition. There only were an estimated 1700 cars build with the 400cui-V8 automatic high-performance convertibles build in 1968, and this car is one of them. We have no real idea how many of them are still around, and let alone the ones that still carry there original matching number vin-stamped drivetrains, but it can't be many ! which makes this a rare car indeed. The 67/68 Firebird is one of the nicest looking early F body cars around with its chrome bumpers and specific bird style nosecone. The 400 models were the performance cars which had the additional special hood with the hood scoops and power bulge, the side mounted quarter fender gills and additional emblems and decals. Finding a 400 coupe might be easier, but a convertible is rarer and considered a real high-end collector muscle car as we explain below.
The 67/68 Firebird convertible was one of the fastest Pontiac's made, with there 400cui V8 that came straight out of the GTO and with there much lighter bodies, these cars could run the 1/4 mile in around 13,5 seconds! Times that even the later models, even those with there famous ram-air engines couldn't match. Even the famous 455HO Trans am's were considerably slower in there 0-60mph and 1/4 mile times due to there lower compression ratios and much heavier chassis and bodies. So the 67 Firebird 400 was one of the fastest cars back then and a true performance car with matching performance suspension upgrades.
With some slight adjustments to the ignition timing and the removal of a standard stop on the carb to prevent the cars of going to fast, the 68 Firebird was a fearsome car at the dragstrip and the engines made close to 400hp in the stock outfit and with stock exhaust systems. As with many factory HP figures in brochures or sales sheets in those days, they were kept on the low side because back then insurance rates were measured against the HP of a certain car.
And above certain HP's the insurance costs were so high that potential buyers didn't buy these cars because the insurance costs were killing, or a car couldn't be insured altogether. So the car manufacturers kept the ratings the gave out on the brochures on the low side to prevent that from happening. With the 68 Firebird that was not different and Pontiac even took out some power via the ignition timing and a special slot on the carb so it couldn't be opened up all the way, something young buyers and hot rodders knew and with an easy fix the cars had way more power than the factory given numbers.
This makes these Firebird's highly collectible as they were faster than for instance the Camaro SS with there heavier 396 engines that also had less performance overall or even the Ford Mustang that didn't even come close in HP ratings. This car was meticulously restored and it comes with history and the correct factory PHS documentation. The body and engine and transmission numbers match the car's vin code and the car is very original and correct all the way. The only change is that the car has a bigger dual exhaust system mounted with headers, but that's positive as you get a fantastic V8 sound back for that against the original system.
More than 75000,- was spend during the restoration (without the car itself) and it's for sale even below the restoration costs so here is your chance to own a fantastic and rare collector muscle car for a great price, you can't go wrong with the car! And it's matching which is really rare for a Firebird as many of them were raced, but this car still carries the engine and driveline that it was born with. The Haggerty car value tool estimates this car around 100+k, and that's without stating the value of a car that numbers matching. Everything you see is either rebuild, restored or new, and the car really drives amazing in every way. Its fast but also very comfortable and perfect foSundayay cruisings.
The color combination is very classy and with the (new rebuild) convertible top down the car looks plain stunning! We found this great car in the hands of a Belgium collector who specialized in Pontiac and he took really great care of the car. The car thereby comes with EU/Dutch papers and ready to rumble.
