This 1968 Ford Mustang Fastback GT390 is super rare and completely original and appears to be number's match with block and trans vin stamped! (very rare with Mustangs) and is equipped with the desirable GT package and the FE390 ford big block hooked up to a correct original Ford automatic trans and 9-inch rear end. It just doesn't get more (proven) original than this!
Manny high-end classic Mustangs are sold as numbers match, but seeing many cars never received their factory Vin stamps on the engine and transmission, or only sometimes have one or the other. They are not really proven original matching number cars. But matching numbers means that the must have the Vin codes in place, combined with the correct casting numbers and many other factory codes that must be correct on the driveline and car body. This car has that all which is absolutely very rare for any Mustang these days and make this car the real deal and highly collectible and much more valuable.
Its an amazing car and with this engine and transmission combination a true muscle car with a great pedigree and in an overall show standard quality condition. The engine and transmission have the Vin codes stamped and are correct in date and casting codes and make that makes this car rarer even more and very collectible, as almost all classic Mustangs lost their original drivetrains along the way in their 45+-year-old lives. With only around 2900! ever build S code fastbacks automatics and of them only approx. 580 had the additional GT package, combined with this color and its extra option's, this Mustang is one of 51 ever build! (according also to it's Marti report) So its very rare and might be one of a hand full ever build with these options and driveline. And how many would have survived al those years and still has its original driveline still in place? All in all, this is one rare and very desirable mustang, and you won't come across another one like it for sure.
This makes this car not only great fun to own and enjoy but also a great and very solid investment as its also a true collector's item. This car was the next best thing you could buy with Ford besides maybe a Shelby GT. Although the Shelby's were more or less the same type of cars and not really faster than the car we show you here. And with all big block fastback's, even the Shelby's, carried the same suspension and steering packages as a GT, so this car offers just as much performance as any Shelby, but for a much lower and more interesting price. Keep in mind also that the 428 cui big blocks are based on exactly the same block's as the FE390 4V engines, but with only another crankshaft to get to the 428 cui, even the exhaust manifolds and intakes are usually the same. And as you might also know, many Shelby GT500's received this exact same engine instead of the 428 back in 1968, due to a shortage of 428 crankshafts for a certain period of time. And seeing you can't tell the difference between them from the outside and seeing performance wise there weren't many differences as stated, nobody noticed it or cared about it back then.
The second generation Mustang's and Shelby's are considered as the best-looking Mustangs ever, especially the fastback cars really stand out and look amazing, sleek, aggressive and fast. And especially the cars equipped with the GT package have many additional features that will make these mustangs stand out even more. The fact that this car was also originally equipped with the highly desirable performance FE 390 4V big block makes it even rarer. The car is completely rotisserie restored and highly detailed, the underside is as nice as the topside and no costs were spared during its restoration. The engine and transmission completely rebuild and so are the complete driveline, brake systems, steering components, suspension, wiring systems, and fuel system, the list with restored and new parts are very long, too long to list it here in details.
Besides the tech spec's, the complete interior, all chrome parts, trim, and decals were restored or are new as well. It's really a fantastic and amazing car and more than 85000,- alone was invested in new parts, rebuilds, paint and restoration costs alone and most labor costs and the rare car itself not included. So at our asking price, this beauty is a real bargain and will become even more valuable in the near future. Finding a rust free and original Fastback Mustang's is becoming pretty rare, finding one that's a true S coded 390 big block that is also equipped with its optional GT package, and with all its special options in this great original color combination is even more unique. Not often did we offer a car like this before and that's just because they're getting almost impossible to find, especially as correct, numbers match and complete with all its original parts and paperwork.
With prices of Shelby's and other big block ford are going up and up, this car is a super solid investment for your hard earned cash and a real collector's item. It will go up in value fast just as they have gone up in the last 25+ years.
