General discription

The real deal original correct and documented, rotisserie restored 1970 Plymouth Superbird! 4-speed in the highly desirable FJ5 Sublime green paint. MIEP MIEP! Says the horn of this amazing and very rare Plymouth Superbird, it is one of only around 620 made 440 4-speed manual trans cars and one of only 60 or so, made in this high impact extra cost color FJ5 Sublime! In combination with the cars additional factory options. The fact that it appears to have all correct and numbers matching Vin stamps in place, and the fact that is a real factory U84/W21 optioned painted dog dish wheel car, makes it a possible one of one ever build Superbird!

Owning a Superbird is one thing, but driving one of the most iconic and most extreme real factory original 70's race car is really extraordinary, especially in this color combination! The 1970 Plymouth Superbird was developed by Chrysler/Plymouth as a real race car for the Nascar races and its one of the first car's ever to hit the streets that were designed in the wind tunnel at NASA. This was done to get a car that would rule the tracks. And that concept was proven to be true as this car was the first car ever to break the 200 mph barrier on the race tracks. Plymouth decided to develop the car so they could get there famous and success full race driver, Richard Petty back home at Plymouth. Richard left Plymouth earlier to race with Ford, but Plymouth wanted to get him back with this all-new extreme car so the would have a world champion winning combination. But the way to get there wasn't that easy as NASCAR changed the rules from 1969 to 1971 and made the descision that all new race cars also needed to have a consumer version of the car as well. And each dealer needed to have one of these cars and with 1920 Dealers. Plymouth had to build at least 1920 of these cars to get it legally homologated by NASCAR so the could race it. But they made it!

Besides the fact that it was already a unique undertaking given the time frame the had, and the fact that this car was way ahead of its time. A truly revolutionary car, that was also really innovating, that made this car a unique event in the history of race and streetcars. So owning one of these cars is having the holy grail of all classic American muscle cars.

The Superbird was a huge success on the tracks, it won many, many races and championships and it broke record after record. The "street version" of the car was almost exactly the same as the race cars so the term "Race it on Sunday, sell it on Monday" in this case, was really a true fact. And although it was not easy to sell the cars at the dealerships, seeing the huge price tags and rarity, in the end, all cars were sold.

The great thing about Superbirds is not only their unique appearance and race pedigree, but also the fact that the car was named after the Road runner Loony Toons cartoon. A name that Plymouth introduced on the Plymouth roadrunner where the Superbird was founded on. Also Plymouth only sold the Superbirds in High impact colors, that gave some of the Superbird's a really flashy and unique appearance that would never be seen again in the later car markets. For the general public there were 3 engine and 2 transmission choices offered , the 440 cui - 375 hp big block, the 440 with six-pack carb's, rated at 390hp and the legendary Hemi 426 rated at 425hp, combined with either the automatic transmission or the ultimate of transmissions the manual 4 speeds with the Hurst pistol grip shifter.

Our car is a 440 big block car, rated originally at 375 hp and is equipped with the Hurst pistol grip 4-speed transmission combined with the strongest rear axles ever seen the light of day, the Dana 60 track pack rear axle with 3,55 rear end gears. This combination, one of the best you can buy, makes the car very fast and the 4-speed, we feel, is a must in a race -street car and brings much more fun as well as almost 35% more power to the rear axle than the automatic transmission cars. This car, for instance, is faster than the original 440-sixpack automatic cars! Even with its original 440 intake and single carb. The Hemi might be the best of the best you can buy but a true Hemi-Superbird in today's market is priceless with cars being sold for way more than over a million!

The extra great thing about this car is, that it is currently also has a correct SIXPACK intake and 3x2 carb set up on it! (Yes we also have the original 4bbl intake and carb with the car as well) So this car is in fact now a factory 390+hp car with a 4 speed which makes it one of the fastest's Superbirds around! Officially the street version of the sixpack 4-speed cars we're faster in top speed and 0-60 times than the HEMI! So this car means business! But if you like the car better with its original intake and carb set-up. No problem we can sell it either way, but with the car comes its original intake so you can always swap it back easily. And so that the car can always go back to its original factory state.

The car comes with original documents from the first owner who bought the car new, complete with the original sales invoices and dealer window sticker. The first owner owned the car until 1976 when it was sold to its second owner that kept the car all the way till 2004 when it was found sitting in his barn. So this car is a documented two owner car and seeing its super original condition and body panels, matching engine and transmission the car never saw many miles in its life.

We have pictures of the cars 47000 mileage and we believe that was the correct mileage before the car was restored. The car was also inspected by G.Govier and he declared the car and its driveline to be all original and numbers matching. All documents to prove this car pedigree and history. This car is restored by one of the best restorer's in the states for Superbirds and the engine was also profesionally rebuild and fully balanced. The overall quality of the car is really high and the underside, engine bay, and the interior are really detailed with the correct factory markings and all numbers of the car and its important parts match. There is also a dealer letter/invoice with the car stating it came originally with the current painted dog dish wheels! And the wheels are correct stamped and date coded as well, really rare. Looking at this car is just a perfect combination in this color.

The combination of the black vinyl top (that all Superbird's have) with the mean green color and wheels, the black tires and decal's makes this car stand out even more than it already does by itself. It really drives, handles and brakes as a new car and it is ready for her new owner. All the body code's, Vin number code's and stamps, as well as the original fender tag, appear to be correct. It's not seen very often that a car is not only correct and original but comes with that much proof of its pedigree as well. These cars are great to own and drive and enjoy, but besides that its also a very good investment for your money, with prices going up constantly in the last 35 years, the will keep rising in the next 35 years and faster than you may think. With this car also being high end restored, combined with its 4-speed trans, Dana axle package, and the rare FJ5 high impact paint color and painted wheels it's highly desirable and probably the best you can buy in today's market.

According to several classic market car appraisers and market value specialist, in this completely restored condition should be worth around 250k easy, with some special ones like this car is, going for close to 300k. The price we're looking after, however, is far from that leaving room for a healthy purchase and your hard earned cash. You need to see this car to understand its quality and looks (just pictures don't do the car justice) and our sales staff will gladly inform you about the cars history and condition. And yes, there might well be some cheaper Bird's out there somewhere, however, keep in mind that this car is a genuine 4 speed- Dana 60 axle car and its completely restored already and has all the correct numbers, and it's in the best color combination there is.

That alone makes this car stand out way beyond most Superbird's. And also keep in mind that a complete rotisserie restoration on these rare cars can run close to 200k alone! so all that considered this car is for sale for a very interesting price, to say the least, and it's cheaper than any car that is not matching or still needs to be restored. A car of this magnitude is only valuable when its restored correct and original and has paperwork to back up its originality, and this car has all those strong points.

And don't wait too long as these cars especially in Europe are highly wanted and the last one we sold was not in our showroom for long! We can sell it only once and won't find the same car ever again, its a rare opportunity to see one for sale of this quality. PTTM has completely tested, serviced and tuned the car and everything is functional and the car drives flawlessly. This car does not just show, but can be driven and enjoyed as it was intended when it was built. It's a turnkey and drives the car. No work needed!

  • Guide: Matching numbers

In the collector car hobby, most investment-minded buyers are acutely interested in a specific car’s history. One of the main aspects of that history is an original or, as most people state it, numbers-matching drivetrain. At pedaltothemetal muscecars we feature a plethora of original and numbers-matching classics including ‘Cudas, Road Runners, Chevelles, Camaros, Corvettes and Trans Ams. And, if a potential buyer knows how to properly identify and interpret certain manufacturing codes, they can further validate their car’s history, or on request we can provide it.

  • Vehicle claims and descriptions

Vehicle/product descriptions, representations and claims on or offline are based on what can be seen by the human eye, documentation, previous professional experience, opinion, factory claims, and, or, information passed on to us by previous owners or restorers. It's to the best of our knowledge that everything we advertise has all indications of being that claim. Please inquire as to what documentation we have on the vehicle you are purchasing or feel free to ask any additional questions you might have, But by no means you can accept our answers as facts as the are our interpretation and might not match yours. It is with integrity and honesty that we describe our cars, but they are in fact, up to 50 years old, may have had many previous owners, modifications or alterations that are unknown to the us, so it's not possible to verify everything about every car in detail. So please feel free to verify that in person or with a third party.

Pttm goes a step further than almost every other seller(s), as we also do a full inspection of our vehicles prior to having them for sale in our showroom and make repairs improvements if needed so. And when a vehicle/product is sold we give it a full service check before you receive it !
